SAN DIEGO LUXURY GUEST SUITE
Pacific Beach Surf Shack Bungalow
Welcome to the Pacific Beach Surf Shack Bungalow, a luxurious and stylish guest suite that blends modern minimalism with the laid-back charm of Southern California. This cozy yet spacious 400 sq. ft. getaway was designed to be the ultimate vacation retreat—perfect for a short-term stay, Airbnb rental, or simply as a private coastal escape. Located just a stone's throw from the vibrant heart of Pacific Beach, it offers guests a unique blend of comfort, convenience, and California cool.
When we were first approached with this project, we saw so much potential in the space. The goal was simple: to create a sleek, functional, and high-end guest suite that felt like a serene retreat but was also incredibly practical for short stays. With only 8 weeks to work our magic, we quickly got to work, ensuring every inch of this tiny house ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit) would maximize its full potential without sacrificing style or comfort.
The Vision
Our vision for the Pacific Beach Surf Shack was to celebrate its location—just moments away from the iconic surf and sun of Pacific Beach—while embracing the modern, minimalist aesthetic that defines true luxury living. Every design decision was made to enhance the natural flow of light, maximize space, and create a relaxed atmosphere that reflects the coastal lifestyle.
The beauty of working with a small space like this is that it forces you to be creative. From layout to design details, we focused on simplifying the space without compromising on luxury. The goal was for this to feel like a true escape, where guests can unwind and recharge.
The Design Process
One of the main challenges was to make this guest suite not only stunning but also highly functional. Since the space was small—just 400 square feet—it needed to be designed for versatility and ease of use. This meant creating seamless transitions between different areas, clever storage solutions, and high-end finishes that bring out the best of the space.
To make the most out of every square inch, we focused on open shelving, custom cabinetry, and multipurpose furniture. The layout was designed to be simple yet effective, with a small kitchen area, a cozy living space, and a comfortable bedroom that feels both spacious and inviting. Every piece of furniture was chosen to serve a specific function while adding to the overall aesthetic—nothing too bulky or out of place.
The Materials & Finishes
When it comes to creating a luxury experience, the details matter. For this project, we chose natural materials that reflect the beachy surroundings, like light wood tones and soft, neutral hues that exude relaxation. The open shelving in the kitchen area features sleek, modern cabinetry in a rich matte black, contrasting beautifully with the warm wood accents and marble countertops. The kitchen also includes state-of-the-art appliances that provide guests with the convenience of home, from a full-sized fridge to a high-end coffee maker—perfect for those early mornings spent watching the surf roll in.
In the living space, we selected comfortable, high-quality furniture that fits the minimalist vibe of the bungalow. A cozy sleeper sofa, paired with a chic oval coffee table, anchors the area while keeping it open and airy. The large windows in the living room allow for plenty of natural light to flood the space, making it feel larger than its 400 square feet. There’s also beautiful glass doors that open up to a private outdoor patio, where guests can relax and enjoy the perfect Southern California weather.
The bathroom is equally luxurious, with sleek, modern fixtures and a spacious walk-in shower. To keep things light and fresh, we used large-format white tiles that make the space feel open and clean, paired with polished chrome fixtures that add a touch of sophistication. A large mirror above the vanity and soft, ambient lighting complete the serene and calming vibe of the space.
The Outdoor Space
As part of the overall design, we wanted to make sure the outdoor space was just as inviting as the interior. The Pacific Beach Surf Shack has a private patio that extends the living space outdoors. We chose minimalistic outdoor furniture—a pair of stylish lounge chairs and a small table—ideal for sipping morning coffee or enjoying a sunset drink after a day spent on the beach. Lush greenery and landscaping were added to give the space a sense of seclusion, making it feel like a true oasis just steps away from the ocean. (Stay tuned as we have plans to install an EPIC palm tree mural on the entire surrounding fence sometime in 2025!)
The End Result
After just 8 weeks of design and installation the Pacific Beach Surf Shack is a testament to the power of thoughtful, intentional design. This luxury guest suite is more than just a place to stay; it’s a true escape, offering guests the perfect blend of modern comfort and coastal charm. Every detail, from the minimalist furniture to the sleek finishes and soothing color palette, was chosen with the intention of creating a relaxing environment that reflects the spirit of the California coast.
The suite has everything a guest could need: high-end appliances, functional storage, a comfortable place to relax, and plenty of space to unwind. Whether it's a weekend getaway or an extended vacation, the Pacific Beach Surf Shack is designed to provide a memorable stay that will leave guests feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.
This project truly embodies the beauty of modern living, proving that even a small space can offer big rewards when it’s designed with care and attention to detail. We are so proud of how this project turned out and can’t wait to see how future guests enjoy their time here!
