Show Notes Episode 5: Brilliant Storage Solutions that are Useful for Tiny Houses + Small Spaces

Hi friends! Thanks for being here. Today we are taking about small space storage solutions and I am really excited about today's show bc quite a few of you have requested this topic to be covered and I think this episode will really help you out.

I want to quickly shout out the Desk Refresh Guide which is a free resource linked in the show notes - this design guide is the perfect action step after listening to this episode because it's a " mini space" which will be less overwhelming- hopefully after completing the Desk Refresh Challenge you'll be inspired to tackle other spaces like closets or maybe even full rooms!

The battle against clutter is difficult in any size home- but is a particular issue in small spaces like tiny homes or studios. Finding storage solutions is more challenging in small spaces because the square footage often prevents solutions like building out additional closets or bringing in furniture. In small spaces we have to be super creative and mindful not only about what comes into our space but also how we use/store/display what is in our space.

Friendly reminder that while much of the content in this podcast is geared around small spaces it is totally applicable to homes of any size.

Benefits of this process:

  • makes daily life more manageable - less maintenance less cleaning!

  • feel lighter happier calmer in the space

  • save time and frustration looking for things- save money buying things you already have

  • Once you've cleared the excess you'll be surrounded by things you love and enjoy

  1. DISCARD -

  • Super important to evaluate our belongings and only keep what we need and love.

  • Must be done first so we know what we are keeping and what kind of storage we need.

  • Mari Kondo "The important thing is not deciding what to discard but rather what you want to keep in your life."

  • We shouldn't even be considering storage solutions during this process.

  • Go through things by category not by location.

  • This process could be it's own post so I don't want to go to far into here but highly recommend the Mari Kondo "spark joy" process which you can find in detail in her book The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up or I've linked a cheat sheet here for quick reference.

    2. DECLUTTER-

  • The key for successful decluttering is intentional placement and storage!

  • Keep visual clutter out of site as much as possible.

  • Unattractive or rarely used items should typically go in closed storage (such as in drawers, closets, or cabinets)

  • If your are short on closed storage, get creative how you can cover clutter- consider a curtain or makeshift divider so you don’t have to look at it.)

  • When addressing open storage (such as bookshelves, nightstands, or desktops) be super intentional how things are placed and displayed. I have a blog post that covers this in great detail linked here.

  • 3. USE VERTICAL SPACE-

  • In tiny homes and small spaces we can't just relay on traditional solutions that fill square footage. We have to be creative about using our vertical space

  • Ideas to consider- wall hooks and floating shelves, hanging storage, pegboards, e4tc

  • 4. HIDDEN STORAGE

  • Closed storage is a great strategy to fight the clutter.

  • Think creatively about spaces that exist but aren't being utilized for storage

  • Examples:

  • Skoolie with storage in the wood ceiling beam

  • storage under floor boards

    5. Multi-use furnitur

  • Since square footage is limited small spaces

  • (storage ottomans, under bed drawers)

    6. Attractive Containers

  • Use attractive or interesting containers to store goods.

  • Consider baskets or vintage wine boxes

    7. Cabinet + Closet Organizers -

  • We established earlier how valuable closed storage is especially in a tiny house

  • worth the investment to make the best use of the space

  • I personally love the stackable drawers from the container store. I use them for all of my hanging clothes since I don't have a dresser.

    8. ALL ABOUT YOU

  • I say this all the time talking about interior design but storage solutions are going to be highly personalized.

  • What works for one person probably won't work for another - we all have our own preferences and use our space in unique ways.

  • Obviously on this platform we can't really address everyone's unique space, belongings, and storage needs so that's where we need to have a conversation 1-1 which we can do via phone or email or Instagram.

  • This podcast is here to help you. I am here to help you.

  • I would love to discuss your situation and help find solutions so please use the link in the show notes to schedule a complimentary connection call or reach out to me via email or Instagram.

I hope this episode has inspired you to take action, taught you the steps to a successful purge, and organize your space and given you ideas about to store all the items you end up keeping.
