Home Decor DIY:How to Make Paper Bag Sun Palms

I came up with this idea after struggling with a dark corner that was begging for a plant but I knew that a real one would never survive. Inspired by sun palms I grabbed some grocery bags from the recycling and started playing around until I got the result I wanted. These are super easy to make and can be painted any color or left bare for a more natural look. I hope you enjoy this project - please share your results on social media tagging @sukkhainteriordesign!

1. Without ripping the bag remove the  handles and gently unfold to extend into a flat paper strip. (This will be used to wrap the base/stem.)

2. Cut down one of the vertical bag folds and cut around the bottom of the bag to remove it. You should now have one large piece of paper. This will be used to create the palm flower top.

3. Depending on desired size of the flower, cut into smaller pieces- the smaller the piece the smaller the palm flower.

1. Use the extended paper bag handle to wrap around the stick or whatever item you are using for the stem base.

2. Using a hot glue gun slowly attach the edge of the strip to the stick. (If using Elmers or something similar, generously coat the inside of the strip and use tape to secure the paper tightly around the stick.

(See lines in image)

3. Set aside to dry

  1. Take one of the pieces of paper and starting at the corner fold the entire piece accordion style  like you’re making a fan. (For folding instructions see here)

  2. Draw a downwards diagonal line on each side from the top of each fold. (See lines on photo 2)

  3. Cut along each line forming the palm leaves.

  1. Place base in the center of the bottom of the fan. Use glue to adhere it.

  2. Using an extra strip of paper and glue tightly wrap around covering where the base and fan meet. (See arrow)
