Designing for Destination: Coastal, Rustic, and Urban Airbnb Interiors

When it comes to vacation rentals, the ambiance of the space plays a pivotal role in attracting guests and ensuring a memorable stay. But probably most importantly is the type of location. Each destination comes with its own unique charm and atmosphere, and as such, requires a tailored approach to interior design. Whether it's a coastal retreat, an urban getaway, a mountain hideaway, or a desert escape, selecting intentional colors, materials, and decor themes can significantly enhance the guest experience and the success of your investement property.

As many of you may be aware I previously worked as the lead designer for a nationally based vacation rental property management company so I have had a lot of experience designing airbnbs and vacation rentals in all kinds of locations from San Diego, Lake Tahoe, Salt Lake City, Boulder, Vermont, Mt Hood Oregon, Joshua Tree, Asheville, Austin Texas and many, many more. Let's explore the distinct interior design approaches suitable for different vacation rental destinations:

Here are a few general tips to keep in mind as we move forward:

  1. When we think of home decor themes for vacation rental designs we want to to try to be subtle.

Ask yourself : How can we allude to the location and surrounds without being overtly obvious which would include examples like slapping crab or whale decor all over a coastal rental or bears/ moose all over a mountain cabin. We want our"theme" to be discrete in approach yet distinct in the feeling that it evokes.

2. Views are a top feature desired by airbnb renters.

If your property has a view it is something that will heavily influence our design in both furniture arrangement, color palettes, and artwork/decor. We want the design to enhance and showcase views not distract from them.

Coastal Retreats

Designing a vacation rental in a coastal area offers a prime opportunity to capture the essence of beach living and infuse the space with a sense of tranquility and relaxation. One of the key elements to consider is the color palette. Opting for hues inspired by the sea and sand, such as soft blues, sandy beige, and seafoam greens, creates a serene backdrop that mirrors the coastal landscape. Crisp whites can be used to evoke the sun-bleached feel of beachside cottages, while also maximizing natural light and enhancing the airy atmosphere. Consider the brighter colors of the local sunrises/sunsets as accent colors.

In addition to color, the choice of materials plays a crucial role in achieving the desired coastal aesthetic. Embracing natural elements like rattan, wicker, and driftwood adds texture and warmth to the space, evoking the organic beauty of the seaside. Weathered wood furniture, jute rugs, and bamboo accents further contribute to the beachy vibe, creating a welcoming environment that invites guests to unwind and embrace the laid-back coastal lifestyle.

To tie the design together and reinforce the coastal theme, incorporating decor elements inspired by the ocean can enhance the overall ambiance. Nautical accents such as dyed textiles, shell or driftwood decor, and artwork featuring the ocean or sky are great options to add depth and charm. Light curtains, sheer fabrics, and textural furnishings contribute to the open and airy feel, allowing guests to fully immerse themselves in the coastal experience.

Urban Getaways

Urban vacation rentals provide guests with a unique opportunity to fully immerse themselves in the bustling energy and rich culture of city life. When designing for such environments, it's essential to capture the modern and cosmopolitan ambiance that characterizes urban living. This starts with selecting a color palette that reflects the dynamic surroundings. Consider timeless neutrals like greys, blacks, and whites to serve as a sophisticated backdrop, while pops of bold colors such as pink, yellow, or teal can add vibrancy and excitement, mirroring the bright lights and energy of the cityscape.

In addition to color, the choice of materials plays a crucial role in achieving the desired urban aesthetic. Opting for contemporary materials like glass, metal, and concrete can help create a sleek and industrial-inspired look. Incorporating elements such as exposed brick walls, concrete countertops, and metal accents adds texture and visual interest, infusing the space with an edgy urban vibe that resonates with the surrounding environment. Remember the key with materials is to acheive balance; a perfect blend of cool and warm.

To further enhance the urban ambiance, embracing a modern and eclectic decor style is key. This involves combining clean lines with eclectic furnishings and artistic accents to create a visually stimulating environment. Urban-inspired artwork, cityscape photography, and vintage posters can celebrate the local culture and landmarks, serving as focal points that reflect the unique character of the city. By incorporating these design elements, urban vacation rentals can offer guests a truly immersive and memorable experience that captures the essence of city living.

Mountain Retreats

Obviously being in Asheville NC in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains this is a common design theme I have implemented in many local projects. Even though they all started with a similar design theme concept combining modern luxury with rustic elements, each property is designed uniquely and has it's own special vibe.

Mountain destinations offer a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, providing guests with the opportunity to reconnect with nature and enjoy the beauty of the great outdoors. When designing a vacation rental in a mountainous area, it's essential to capture the essence of this natural beauty and create a space that serves as a cozy and rustic retreat. Consider selecting a color palette that draws inspiration from the surrounding landscape, with earthy tones like warm browns, deep greens, rusty oranges, and crisp whites. These colors not only evoke the tranquility of the mountains but also create a sense of warmth and comfort that welcomes guests into the space.

In addition to color, the choice of materials plays a crucial role in achieving the desired mountain aesthetic. Embracing natural and rustic materials such as wood, stone, leather, and wool helps to bring the outdoors inside and adds to the overall ambiance of the space. Incorporating elements like reclaimed wood furniture, stone fireplace surrounds, and cozy wool blankets enhances the rustic charm of the vacation rental, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere that encourages relaxation and rejuvenation.

To further enhance the mountain retreat experience, it's important to emphasize a cozy and rustic decor style throughout the space. This can be achieved by incorporating plush furnishings, warm textiles, and nature-inspired accents that reflect the natural beauty of the surroundings. Adding touches of mountain charm with wildlife motifs, antler decor, and landscape paintings depicting scenic vistas helps to create a sense of connection with the outdoors, allowing guests to fully immerse themselves in the mountain experience - just don't go too crazy!

(I've seen many airbnbs that end up looking like bear museums with bears adorning every surface you could imagine. )

Hot tubs and fireplaces are also big ticket items in appealing to renters for mountain properties so consider including these into your airbnb interior design plan.

Desert Getaways

Desert destinations possess a captivating allure with their vast expanses of arid landscapes and striking natural formations. When envisioning a vacation rental in the desert, it's essential to harmonize with the surroundings and create a space that echoes the serene beauty and rugged elegance of the desert environment. This begins with a thoughtful selection of colors that draw inspiration from the desert landscape itself. Warm earth tones like sandy beige, terracotta, burnt orange, and dusty mauve not only reflect the hues of the sand dunes and rocky terrain but also evoke a sense of tranquility and warmth that is characteristic of desert environments.

In addition to color, the choice of materials plays a pivotal role in capturing the essence of the desert aesthetic. Embracing natural and indigenous materials such as adobe, stone, clay, and raw wood helps to establish a rustic and organic feel that is synonymous with desert architecture. These materials not only blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings but also contribute to the overall sense of authenticity and connection to the environment. Incorporating textured fabrics such as linen, cotton, and wool further enhances the tactile experience, adding layers of comfort and coziness to the space while maintaining a minimalist aesthetic that complements the stark beauty of the desert landscape.

We can continue this tactile texture theme as we look into decor. Locally throw pots , woven baskets, and wall coverings are all great options. By prioritizing clean lines, uncluttered spaces, and natural light, the vacation rental becomes a tranquil retreat where guests can unwind and reconnect with nature. Minimalist furnishings and decor allow the beauty of the desert to take center stage, while strategic placement of windows, faux cacti, and outdoor living areas encourages a seamless integration between indoor and outdoor spaces, allowing guests to fully immerse themselves in the breathtaking vistas and peaceful ambiance of the desert surroundings.

In conclusion, crafting a vacation rental that truly embodies the essence of its destination entails a meticulous approach to color schemes, material choices, and decor themes. Whether situated along the coastline, nestled in a bustling urban center, tucked away in the serene mountains, or surrounded by the vast expanse of the desert, the goal remains consistent: to curate an ambiance that not only elevates the guest experience but also pays homage to the distinctive charm of the location. By aligning the interior design with the spirit of the destination, a memorable and immersive experience is forged, leaving an indelible impression on guests and instilling in them a desire to return time and time again.
