Moving with Style: Road-Ready Interior Decor Tips for RVs and Tiny Houses

Road Ready Interior Design Ideas for RVs, Tiny Homes, and Travel Trailers

Living in an RV, tiny home, van, or travel trailer is a unique experience. It's literally taking your home with you. But designing the interior of these small spaces can be challenging. When it comes to designing the interior of your RV, tiny home, van, or travel trailer, there are a few key considerations to keep in mind. First and foremost optimize storage and think about the durability of materials and furnishings, as they will need to withstand the constant movement and vibrations of the road.

Here are some innovative design ideas to keep your mobile abode stylish and road-ready!

1. Multi-Purpose Furniture

The key to maximizing space in a tiny home is using multi-purpose furniture.

Another idea is to incorporate foldable furniture, such as collapsible chairs or tables, that can be easily stored away when not in use. This allows for more open space during travel and prevents items from shifting or falling over. Additionally, consider using furniture with built-in storage compartments, like ottomans or bed frames with drawers, to maximize storage space without sacrificing style. By choosing multi-purpose and space-saving furniture, you can create a functional and road-ready interior design for your mobile home.

2. Wall-Mounted Storage

When it comes to storage, think vertical! Wall-mounted shelves and cabinets are perfect for storing books, dishes, and other small items. They're secure, easy to access, and don't take up floor space. Just make sure they're installed properly to withstand the rigors of travel and consider adding a lip to the edge of any shelving.

It not only saves space but also adds a unique way to display decor. Imagine a wall with hanging baskets or floating shelves. They can hold books, plants, or even kitchen items. It's like having a functional piece of art! Plus, it keeps things organized and easy to find.

When planning the interior design of an RV or travel trailer, consider vertical storage. It's a smart way to combine style and practicality.

3. Secure & Fastening

Everything in your mobile home should be securely fastened or packed when you move. Depending how often you move you may want to consider the decorative accents strategically because as a single female doing this alone - moving is a real b*tch! So you don't want to unnecessarily add more to you pack list.

This includes furniture, appliances, and home decor items. Use brackets, straps, and non-slip mats to keep things in place.

Securing decor in an RV or travel trailer is essential for safety and to prevent damage while on the road. Start by choosing lightweight and unbreakable items for decoration. Use adhesive hooks and strips that can hold items securely without causing damage to the walls.

For pictures and wall art, consider using picture-hanging strips which are easy to remove and leave no residue.

Secure loose items like vases or figurines with museum putty, a sticky material that holds objects firmly in place but can be easily removed when needed. (I pack mine but I also typically move everything 5-6 months so it's not as big a pain to pack as if I moved more often.

Also I'm a designer and I am constantly changing things up and moving things around so it makes sense not to secure things down. Except my art! Most of my limited wall space is filled with special pieces on velcro strips.

Rugs can be kept from sliding around with non-slip rug pads or if your like me and use moving as opportunity to deep clean you can roll them so you can mop as soon as you get there and unpacked and set up again:)

4. Lightweight Materials

Weight is a HUGE factor for any mobile tiny house, RV, van, or travel trailer.

Heavy furniture and decor can make your mobile home difficult to maneuver and potentially unsafe. Opt for lightweight materials whenever possible.

When decorating a van, bus, RV or travel trailer, it's crucial to consider the use of lightweight materials.

This is because every extra pound can impact fuel efficiency and make the vehicle harder to maneuver. Lightweight materials such as aluminum, thin wood panels, or synthetic fabrics for upholstery are excellent choices. They not only reduce weight but also offer durability and ease of maintenance. For instance, aluminum is resistant to rust and corrosion, making it ideal for long-term use. Similarly, synthetic fabrics are easy to clean and resist wear and tear.

5. Compact Appliances

When selecting compact appliances for your mobile home, consider their size, weight, and safety features. Look for appliances that are specifically designed for travel, such as refrigerators with locks to prevent doors from swinging open during transit. My absolute favorite appliance I got for the trailer is my mini Nespresso coffee maker!

These compact appliances not only save space but also ensure that everything stays secure while on the road. Additionally, opt for energy-efficient models to minimize power consumption and maximize the lifespan of your mobile home's battery or generator. With the right compact appliances, you can enjoy all the conveniences of a traditional home while on the go.

6. Soft Decor

Soft decorative pillows, rugs, and curtains can make your mobile home feel cozy. But they also serve a practical purpose. They provide extra padding, reducing the risk of injury during sudden stops or turns. In addition to their functionality, soft furnishings also add a touch of comfort and personal style to your mobile home. Opt for fabrics that are easy to clean and maintain, such as removable and washable cushion covers or curtains made from durable materials. Rugs can be a layer of added insulation especially in the colder months. Consider using non-slip rug pads to keep rugs in place and prevent accidents. By choosing the right soft furnishings, you can create a comfortable and safe environment while adding a cozy aesthetic to your mobile home.

7. Bright Colors and Mirrors

Being strategic with pops of bright colors and mirrors can add depth to a small space. Use light shades for walls and ceilings, and add pops of color with accessories. Mirrors reflect light and create an illusion of space, making your mobile home feel airy and spacious.

To maximize the effect, strategically place mirrors on walls or doors to create the illusion of depth. Additionally, consider using mirrored furniture or decorative accents to further enhance the sense of space. Bright colors and mirrors not only make your mobile home feel larger but also add a vibrant and energetic atmosphere to the interior design.

8. Outdoor Living Space

Don't forget about the outside of your mobile home.

Awnings, fold-out tables, outdoor rugs and portable chairs can create a wonderful outdoor living space. It's like having an extra pop up room to enjoy the surrounding environment and nature.

I have a fold out set and rug and recently added a hammock this summer and it was such a game changer. I'm really excited for this spring to update my fold out seating and add some outdoor pillows. Having a comfortable space to enjoy the outdoors really makes tiny life so much more enjoyable.

9. Easy-to-Clean Surfaces

Traveling can be messy so it's important to choose easy-to-clean surfaces. Opt for luxury vinyl plank flooring that can be easily wiped clean and is resistant to stains. Consider using a paint finish with a slight sheen, like eggshell, for walls that are easy to wipe down. When selecting rugs and upholstery, opt for washable or stain-resistant fabrics to keep them looking fresh. By choosing easy-to-clean surfaces, you can maintain a tidy and hassle-free living space while on the road.

10. Personal Touches

Most importantly add personal touches.

Adding personal touches to your mobile home is essential for creating a sense of comfort and familiarity. Displaying photos of loved ones, incorporating plants for a touch of nature, hanging artwork that reflects your style, and showcasing souvenirs from your travels all contribute to making your space feel like home. Just be sure to securely fasten these items to prevent damage while on the move. By infusing your mobile home with personal touches, you can create a space that truly reflects your personality and makes you feel at at home wherever you go.

My tiny space is covered in the trinkets, photos, and artwork that I adore most; my most favorite part of my tiny home is how much it feels exactly like me!

Conclusion:

Designing the interior of an RV, tiny home, or travel trailer is all about balance. You need to create a space that's comfortable, stylish, and safe for travel and the literal and figurative "bumps in the road".

I hope that these tips will have you well on your way to creating a road ready tiny house that's perfect for your adventures without sacrificing on style and the comforts of home.
